Ice Cream Science!
January 25th, 2012 . by Sensei
Ice Cream can be delicious...but not this kind of ice cream! We learned to combine shaving cream, glue, and food coloring to create a wonderful soft, fluffy new art material. We waited for it to dry over night and the next morning we discovered it had dried into delicious looking fluffy ice cream cones!

The Kagami Mochi preparation process can be quite difficult and taking time. If the mochi is made too hard, it is difficult to break. If it is too soft, it is difficult to chew. In the past, our children ate mochi that had been previously prepared by my mother. This year, I prepared the mochi for next year by myself so that I could share my family's tradition with our students. This was also my way of showing our school's appreciation for the joy our students bring us every year. I have also already begun preparing mochi for the next New Year. My hope is that by sharing food with our students made by my own hands, they will begin to develop an appreciation for the work and effort that goes into preparing traditional homemade food.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
December 21st, 2011 . by SenseiHappy Holidays to everyone! We had such a wonderful time at our Christmas party this year. We learned more songs and dances than ever before. We loved playing instruments like drums and bells while we sang our holiday songs. A special thank you to Miss Aki for letting us borrow her own Holiday Bells! We baked our own gingerbread and cranberry breads to eat at snack time. And we were so excited to be visited by a special guest: SANTA CLAUSE!! Thank you Santa for singing and dancing the Mambo with us, and bringing all of our children their very own presents. We wish everyone a very Happy Holiday this year.
Getting Ready for Christmas

Gusty winds blew through California early this December. Even though many trees were damaged, we tried to make use of the materials nature gave us to explore. Miss Maria brought giant palm leaves that had fallen in her neighborhood and we had an exciting day of science discovery! Even though the palms were big, they were very light to hold. Even though the palms looked hard, they were very easy to cut. Even though the palms looked rough, they made very soft pillows when piled all together. It was very exciting to have an opportunity to explore the elements of nature in the world around us!
Happy Thanksgiving!

We are thankful for so many things this year! We enjoyed learning about pilgrims and native Americans and hearing the story of the first Thanksgiving. We enjoyed making our own pilgrim hats to wear on singing day. We also worked very hard on our decorations for our Thanksgiving lunch. We learned about cornicopias and had a great time creating them horns using Trader Joe's bags. We used construction paper and a combination of recycled materials to create all the vegetables and fruits that we filled inside. We were so thankful to be able to sit down together and enjoy a delicious and nutricious Thanksgiving meal prepared by our teachers. A very special thanks to our students who cooked our cornbread and helped chop all the vegetables for our Thanksgiving stuffing.

It's not quite time for enjoying turkey dinner yet. But we were all very thankful for our delicious imonikai! We enjoyed learning how to chop vegetables slowly and carefully. It was exciting to witness and experience the whole cooking process from chopping the raw vegetables to cooking and eating a delicious soup! Special thanks to Mrs. Sullivan for introducing us to a wonderfully fun Thanksgiving snack that we enjoyed making and eating! Using Hawaiian King rolls, pretzels, grapes, and colorful cereal we made small edible snacks in the shape of turkeys!
